PURPOSE
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:
The purpose of the Veterans Memorial shall be to erect a memorial that will include the names of veterans that have served under honorable conditions in the United States Armed Forces (US Army, US Navy, US Airforce, US Marines, US Coast Guard, US Reserve Forces, and Merchant Marine, etc.) AND meet at least one of the following requirements:
1. Any Veteran who has resided in Hopkins County, Texas.
2. Any Veteran who is buried in Hopkins County, Texas.
3. Unanimous agreement of the Executive Board.
The Veterans Memorial Committee has invested significant effort in establishing a unified effort to achieve the purpose stated above. Desiring to build this memorial in a prominent location has led us to the City Square adjacent to and South of the County Courthouse on a property presently called Heritage Square Park. This property which is owned by the City of Sulphur Springs is strategically located and presents the opportunity to revitalize the heart of our community. Such a public piece of property as this demands significant community involvement for development success.
The Veterans Memorial Committe, with the support of the Downtown Business Alliance, City of Sulphur Springs and Hopkins County Commissioners Court plans to construct a park like memorial. This Veterans memorial Park in Heritage Square will attract visitors from far and near. The Architecture will complement the County Courthouse and the atmosphere will be such that people will come to honor and fellowship.
To facilitate these goals, the design should include:
* Stone wall sections with veterans names, organized for ease of locating a loved one's name with areas that provide opportunities for visitors to reflect on and honor those inscribed.
* A structure or structures that honor this purpose and reflect a sense of pride and endurance.
* Elements with energy such as flags, sounds, or possibly flowing water.
* An open pavillion for public events.
* Paving patterns or other architectural features that would draw people to the Memorial and Square.
